Peter Forrester
Make sure that you take advantage of the expertise around you, talk to your colleagues, ask advice from the senior staff because they have all been there before.

Peter is one of our Senior Recruitment Consultants at Rise, on his way to becoming an Assistant Manager.

“I studied Business Studies at the University of West England (UWE), after I graduated I went back home to Cambridge for a while and started attending interviews for recruitment jobs in Bristol. I went to several interviews but Rise really stood out from the rest as the place to get the best progression and training opportunities.”

“I first interviewed with a manager and then with one of the Directors, Ben, who I felt gave a good impression to me especially as we had quite similar backgrounds with Ben also having studied Business Studies at UWE. I got to meet my future team after my second interview and that really sold it for me, it was just such a good environment where everyone seemed really supportive but also up for a laugh.”

“My first few weeks were really good, I got promoted after my first quarter from Trainee to Recruitment Consultant, but I’m not going to lie after that it got harder. The important thing is not to give up, you have to power through, make a list of everything you need to do and just get it done. Make sure that you take advantage of the expertise around you, talk to your colleagues, ask advice from the senior staff because they have all been there before.”

“My biggest achievement to date is breaking the company record for largest booking in a week, that was a really big moment for me, and of course making it to Senior Consultant.”

“My advice to anyone just starting out in recruitment is just not to give up, if something knocks you back don’t let it keep you down, push through, get advice from the people around you because they can help you, they’ve been through it and they can help you come out the other side.”

Emma Cox
You need resilience, positivity and a sense of humour.

Emma came to Rise two years ago after working as a Personal Trainer. “My brother was in recruitment in London, he was doing exceptionally well and I wanted to see if I could do that well myself.

“It’s hard to get recruitment jobs when you have no experience but Rise has a policy of recruiting on personality and potential rather than recruitment experience. They invited me for an interview and I was won over by the culture. The way they talked about the earning potential and the progression was really inspiring and you could see just by looking around how well people were doing.

“When I first started I was so determined to do well. It didn’t really hit me how hard this job is until about a month in but it’s good because the environment is set up to support you. Everyone in the company has been in that position; even Ben and Jeff have been at the bottom and had to work their way. So when they tell you that it’s going to be hard but it will get better and you will reap the rewards, you believe them.”

Emma has recently been promoted to Assistant Manager for the South East team. “You have to give it 100% because as soon as you take your foot off that pedal, it’s only you who is going to suffer. It’s a really good progression structure; if you know where you want to be you can see exactly what you need to do to make it happen.

“You need resilience, positivity and a sense of humour because it will be hard and you will be bad to start with but you need to be able to laugh it off and keep going. In the hard times you need to just keep your eye on the end result.”

Matt Tarr
My team is made up of very different people with very different motivations but when we are all working together we contribute different things and we get things done.

After graduating in Business Studies, Matt went to work in a bar and a call centre. “I remember being in the call centre and thinking this cannot be my life, just dealing with one complaint after another. Someone I knew at university was telling me about Rise; I didn’t even really know what recruitment was but I knew I wanted to achieve something big and maybe this was where I could do that.”

The first weeks on the job were different to what they would be now when the company was smaller; “There were no teams, just individuals; I was daunted but I picked it up quickly. It was hard work but we just knew we had to make a hundred calls a day. Keep it simple, don’t worry about the negatives just get on and do what you need to do.”

Matt is now a Team Manager for the Midlands. “My team is quite varied, we have the quiet ones and we have the more party types but when we are in work we work as a team and we get things done. It’s not just a job for one kind of person, as long as you are ready to work for it you can succeed.

“Recruitment is a true meritocracy, if you work hard you will get what you want and you are recognised for what you put in. You need determination, motivation and not to worry too much about the failures and just concentrate on the little wins to start off with. My team is made up of very different people with very different motivations but when we are all working together we contribute different things and we get things done.”

John Leng
To work in recruitment you need to be sales-y, but to work at Rise you need good morals, ethics and determination.

John has been at Rise since the very beginning, working one day a week whilst studying business studies at UWE, then working a placement year before becoming a full fledged trainee in 2008. “I am a great believer that what you put in should be what you get out, I was drawn to the idea of being able to pave a career for myself, the opportunity for unlimited progression in a company that wanted to do things the right way.”

“I joined during the recession, it was really tough but it really challenged me and it taught me a lot about myself, it gave me the grit, determination and skill that you need to be successful in this business.”

John is now Regional Manager for the South East, his team was top team in 2013, “I really enjoy taking trainees through the steps to becoming consultants and seeing people develop.”

“To work in recruitment you just need to wear a suit and be very sales-y, but to work in Rise you need good morals and ethics, strong abilities and determination. You need to have the mentality that you will never give up. In some other high paid jobs there is a lot of red tape but our progression is based on meritocracy, what you put in is what you get out.”

Ben McCarthy
The culture that we’ve created in this business is not about the money or the profit. It’s about whether we can be proud of the company we are in.

Ben co-founded Rise Technical with his business partner Jeff Leng in 2005. Ten years on, Rise is one of the fastest growing companies in the country.

How would you say Rise has changed in the last ten years?
It has changed massively. We’ve gone from two guys with lots of ambition but no real direction to one of the fastest growing companies in the UK. We’ve developed as a business with the moral code, our manuals, our training, development and understanding of what we need to do to meet our goals and objectives.

The real turning point for me was the recession. It taught us that you really need to reduce your costs as much as possible, maximise your profit and keep cash in the business. Now everything that we do supports our goals of becoming the number 1 engineering recruiter, being a great place to work and being one of the fastest growing companies in the country.

What drives you toward success?
I’m competitive, I just want to see how far I can push myself. I’m ambitious and where before my ambitions may have seemed a bit far fetched I can now see how I can actually reach those goals.

What achievements are you particularly proud of?
I’m proud of the people we’ve got within the business and I’m proud of the culture we’ve created of people striving to be the best that they can possibly be. The culture that we’ve created in this business is not about the money or the profit, it’s about whether we can be proud of the company we are in.

What’s your biggest priority right now?
To really make sure that we hit our goals, we need to be the number one, we need to be a great place to work and we need to be the fastest growing. The most immediate priority is being a great place to work, we always have been but as we grow sometimes that can get lost.

Can you sum up your philosophy?
You need to have positive thinking and ambition to get to the top. Just make sure that you do it by being honest and morally correct so that you can be proud about the way you have gotten there.

Jeff Leng
Have big goals, learn quickly and never give up.

Jeff co-founded Rise Technical Recruitment with Ben McCarthy in 2005 having spent four years working together as managers in the Bristol branch of a recruitment company. Ten years later we talk about what led to the Rise Technical of today.

What led you to starting Rise Technical Recruitment?
In 2000 after graduating from UWE with an economics degree, I started working for a stock-listed recruitment company. The first three months were tough but after a year I became top consultant and progressed very quickly. I’d wanted to start my own business since I was eight years old when I read the poem ‘Thinking’ by Walter D Wintle. When the opportunity came in 2005 to sell my car and have enough to start up I had to take it.

How would you say the company has changed in the last 10 years?
We started out in an office the size of my desk. We grew very quickly to two offices with 40 members of staff. Then the recession hit and we went down to 8 employees. It taught us how to be business people, how to make sure that you look after your staff, provide great service and keep cash in the company.

Since then, in the last 4 years, we have doubled headcount, turnover and profit year on year but during that time we’ve kept the culture the same; it’s still a small business culture, a very close knit environment.

What drives you toward success?
Our goals. Goals for me are not about money but creating something exceptional.

What achievements are you particularly proud of?
Seeing people develop and become success stories.

What is your biggest priority right now?
The main priority is to make sure that the company is the best that it can possibly be.

Can you sum up your philosophy?
Have big goals, learn quickly and never give up .
